Artist Statement - "Dots"

My Dots fascinate me.  They are simple alone but powerful together.  A single dot can appear “out of place” in an image covered in dots.  Different pointillism artists have distinct styles, and yet they are just using dots.  How can something so simple be so varied and complex?

Seurat proposed colors aren’t singular; they exist based on what they are being compared to.  A red next to a warm yellow might look cool, but that same red next to a cool blue might look warm.  So then… what is red?

To create and discover simultaneously with this comparison balancing act is wondrous and exciting.

The Process

Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac developed the technique in 1886, branching from Impressionism.

In the Gallery

One can’t help but ask “did you really paint all those dots?” when they look closely at original works of art currently exhibited.

Come look for yourself and wonder at the patience and creatively to blend together dots of color that present new pointillism works and older favorites on view today.
